Smooth muscle activity underpins a number of physiological functions that can alter in response to physiological and pathological cues. This inherent plasticity is very different from skeletal or cardiac muscles that are terminally differentiated and rarely change from a contractile state. This symposium will bring researchers from across the smooth muscle spectrum to illustrate how smooth muscle activity alters in physiological situations as well as in diseased scenarios and will highlight some of the mechanisms that underlie the remodelling of smooth muscle.
