Much work in recent years has pointed to clear links between alterations in cardiac cellular calcium and the development of cardiac arrhythmias. Such disordered calcium signalling can be induced pharmacologically even in normal cells. However, these Ca-dependent arrhythmias are particularly evident in two clinical situations. (1) Heart failure; (2) in some inherited arrhythmias which result from mutations in genes encoding various calcium handling proteins. This translational symposium will move from the basic mechanisms underlying abnormal calcium signalling through to the disease situation.
